Special Issue on Emerging Technologies in 5G-Based IoT

The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed the connectivity landscape in a tremendous way. Billions of things (sensors, machines, wearable, and other devices) with communication, computing, and storage capability are connected in the IoT, which allows a plethora of applications in various domains such as smart city, smart grid, smart health, autonomous driving, smart health, and so forth. Connecting these small yet numerous things, which may exceed 20 billion by 2020 according to a report by Gartner, will put a huge burden on the existing network infrastructures. The 5G (and beyond) communication networks are emerging as a key candidate technology to address this issue by offering extremely high data rate and low latency to support the massive number of IoT devices and a diverse set of applications. For example, 5G can be harnessed for highly mobile IoT applications including the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which involve highly mobile vehicles on the ground and drones in the sky. The 5G-based IoT networks, however, confront number of challenges, which need to be addressed in order to make it a reality.

This Special Issue is soliciting original technical papers addressing the main research challenges in the direction of 5G-based IoT and its applications, including, but not being limited to the following topics:

Network architecture design for 5G-based IoT networks.Machine-to-Machine (M2M) or Machine-type communications over 5G networks.Emerging applications of 5G-based IoT networks, including smart city/society, smart grid, smart agriculture, smart health, smart industry, autonomous/smart vehicle, etc.Multimedia communications over IoT networks.Use cases of 5G networks within IoT and IoV.Social networks for 5G-based IoT and IoV networks.Software-Defined Networking (SDN) Assisted IoT.Device-to-Device (D2D) communications for 5G-enabled IoT networks.5G and beyond networks for delay-sensitive IoT delivery and analytics.Performance evaluation of cloud and edge/fog computing in 5G-based IoT and IoV networks.Security, privacy, and trust management for 5G-based IoT networks.Applications of blockchain within 5G-based IoT networks.Validation using simulation and/or testbeds.Implementation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) within IoT and IoV networks.

Manuscript Submission Guidelines

Manuscripts should conform to the standard format as indicated in the Information for Authors section on the journal website. Each submitted paper should be unpublished in any other journal and/or must not be under review elsewhere. Submissions would be considered based on originality, novelty, timeliness, presentation, and overall relevance to the scope of the Special Issue.

Complex Adaptive Systems Modeling (CASM) is a unique high quality, peer-reviewed journal developed for multidisciplinary researchers with an interest in two modeling and simulation paradigms; namely agent-based modeling and complex networks. Researchers interested in the modeling and simulation of Complex Adaptive Systems range from the social sciences to life sciences and from computer sciences to archeology and ecology. A unique feature of CASM is the goal of bridging a gap between different disciplines without sacrificing readability of articles across its broad readership; articles published in CASM are expected to be written so as to be comprehensible by researchers not only from the same discipline but also understandable by readers from others. So, a computer science paper in CASM should be written so as to be accessible to Biologists, Social scientists and vice versa.
